Is it starting?

November 6th, 2009 · 2 Comments

It could be starting! The anti anti-vaccine backlash. First the Adam Carolla podcast from November 2nd with Dr. Bruce, where they called out Jenny McCarthy for just generally not being the sort of person we should trust for medical advice (YAY!!!) and now today’s FreakAngels ยป Interlude 06.

THE WORLD ISN’T FALLING FOR YOUR BULLSHIT, YOU FUCKING ANTI-VACCINE NUT JOBS!

Haha, I gladly turned down the vaccine at the school I work at when swine flu was in full boom supposedly, a few weeks ago. I was really disgusted with all the hype and the panic. I do believe that certain thinking can have a direct effect on one’s physical condition and I opted for more sleep, vitamin c, positive thinking, and again, more sleep.

I’d gladly get the swine flu vaccine even though I never get flu vaccines and over the past several years I haven’t been sick once – until this last cold I got.

My personal reason being, it’s not that I don’t think I could shake off the flu. I’m not worried about me personally. But my mother-in-law is 80, her sister is 90, and my husband was hit by a car two years ago followed by months in the hospital. Over the past two years, I’ve seen way too much suffering caused by people coming down with illnesses when their immune systems are low due to circumstances beyond their control.

For a lot of people, it’s not a question of just being healthy and taking more vitamin C. My husband went through this period in his recovery where his immune system was brought low because he was recovering. (long story, but it’s a physiological result of his brain healing). Both the MIL and her sister take medications that can have the effect of depressing the immune system. Now both of them have likely already encountered the H1N1 back in the day, but it’s not guaranteed. They’re both strong and have had such long vibrant lives, I’d hate to know that I had any hand transmitting an illness to them that could progress to pneumonia and even death.

I know there’s a lot of other things that can happen to people, but I just don’t want to know I caused anyone else any harm. If they come across harm from some other vector, well, that’s life. But I don’t want it to be me.
