Why FFFFOUND! SSSSucks

December 15th, 2009 · No Comments

I have a hate/love relationship with FFFFOUND!, the “image bookmarking” website.

Love, because by browsing it’s images daily, I find gorgeous and inspirational things like this:

Hate, because they almost never give a link back to the original artist, creator, or source. There’s never even a mention of the originator’s name. In the case of the above image, FFFFOUND! merely links to a Tumblog. That person didn’t create the art, they only found it. And worse, FFFFOUND! only linked to the Tumblog in general, not the post that featured the image. When that happens, it ends up being near impossible to track down the exact Tumblog entry to see if there’s more information.

In other words, if I wanted to know who designed this interior and where it was, I’ve hit a dead end. That, I’m afraid, is bullshit when it comes to the web. It just requires a link – free and easy – and not bothering is both disrespectful to the original content creator, but also to your reader who may be curious for more.

In most cases that FFFFOUND! has done this and I wished to re-post the item, I’ve been able to do some creative Google searching and find the original artist/creator eventually, so it IS possible.

I think if you’re not willing to credit the original artist, then don’t repost their work, jerk-off. If the original artist can’t be found (and not just because you’re a lazy fuck) then the post should be framed as a request for information.

And, because I care, here’s the original source of the above image:

Appetizing Godiva Chocoiste Shop by Wanderwall

A post at b-fragile about Godiva’s new flagship store in Harajuku. The article there has many more luscious photos of the place and relevant info, including the interior designers—information we were denied by FFFFOUND!
